Chapter 1
The Alphabet

There are seventeen vowels and twenty seven consonants in Kashmiri. These are given below:

Capital (Upper Case):

 

CONSONANTS

Capitals are given in the first line and small case in the next.

The phonetic guide to the vowels and consonants are given below. It may interest the reader to know that in the English language also there are a total of forty-four (44) phonetic sounds viz, 21 vowel sounds and 23 consonants (See Oxford Word-Power Dictionary O. U. Press 1993)

Another way of writing the Kashmiri alphabet is the same as followed for English, writing the vowels and consonants together in the following order:
